Hardcover haul gone soft, did cheaper glue ruin my old paperbacks?
I grabbed a stack of 1980s thrillers from a thrift store in Des Moines for $4 total, and the bindings feel like new, but my 2020 hardcovers from the same author are already cracking at the spine. Is it just wear and tear, or did publishers switch to a cheaper adhesive around that time? Some folks swear the 90s was the golden age of book glue, others say it's all survivor bias. Anyone else notice a clear before and after in their own shelf?
