Dropped $65 on a "rare" paperback at an estate sale in Boise and found the $4.99 Half Price Books sticker under the dust jacket

The seller swore it was a first edition but it's a 12th printing from 1987, which is worth maybe $6 on a good day. Now I peel back every dust jacket before I pay, so am I being paranoid or does everyone do this?
