Warning: our club almost broke up over how we picked books vs a new way we tried in March
Back in March our club in Sacramento got into a huge fight over the next pick because we always vote on 5 titles at once and the loudest person wins. We switched to a blind rotation where one member picks 3 books and we rank them before anyone says a word. That one change cut our meeting from 2 hours to 40 minutes and nobody stormed out. I know it sounds small but the ranking step is what made the difference, not the blind part. Has any other club tried picking a short list first and does it hold up after a few months?
Ranking three books before anyone talks basically stops the loud people from stacking the deck. Tbh most clubs fight over the pick because the first person to speak sets the mood for everyone else, so doing it silent and in order changes the whole room. Ours held up for about six months until we got lazy and started skipping the ranking step, then the long meetings came right back.
