Vent: My book club nearly fell apart over a single line in 'The Great Gatsby'

Honestly, we were discussing chapter 3 last week and someone said, 'Gatsby's smile is just creepy, not charming.' Tbh, that one comment split our group of 8 right down the middle for a solid 45 minutes. Half of us argued it showed his desperate hope, the other half were convinced it was a calculated fake. I realized we were all bringing our own baggage to that single description. It got so heated that Sarah from Portland almost left the Zoom call. Ngl, it taught me that picking apart a tiny detail can sometimes reveal more about the readers than the book itself. Has your club ever gotten stuck arguing over something that small?

My old club spent 20 minutes once debating if the curtains in that one scene were actually blue. I was on team "they're just blue," and I'm pretty sure my take was so basic it made the English major in the group visibly cringe.

Was it really that deep though?
