Tried reading a classic novel out loud to the group and got roasted for 20 minutes straight

I thought doing a dramatic reading of Moby Dick chapter 1 would spark debate, but everyone just told me to stop narrating like a bad audiobook, has anyone else had their book club turn on their presentation style?

Read somewhere that dramatic readings work better with short poems not whole chapters.
