That one guy at my book club who hated every single book we picked

Last month at our meeting for "Project Hail Mary," this older guy Frank spent 20 minutes ranting about how the science was all wrong and the humor was childish. Turns out he had been coming to meetings for two years just to complain, and nobody ever asked him what he actually liked. Have you ever had a member like that who never seems to enjoy anything?

Frank never actually read any of the books, he just came to argue about the covers.

Two years is a long time to just show up and complain. I wonder if anyone ever just straight up asked him, "Frank, what's a book you actually enjoyed?" Because the way you tell it, it sounds like he was getting something out of the arguing, not the reading. Did your group ever try picking something totally outside your normal genre to see if he reacted differently, or did you just let him keep being the grumpy guy in the corner?
