That book club meeting last Tuesday was the worst I've ever sat through

We picked 'The Midnight Library' because everyone said it was life changing and profound. I went in ready to like it, but after 45 minutes of people crying about how it made them rethink their choices, I had to speak up. I said the whole premise felt cheap to me, like it was just emotional manipulation dressed up as philosophy. Everyone stared at me like I kicked a puppy. The host even asked if I was 'okay' like something was wrong with me for not loving it. I get that people connect differently, but can we admit some books get praised just because they make you feel something, not because they're actually good? Has anyone else been the only person in a club who hated a book everyone else adored?

...and that's when I realized I'd forgotten to swap out my "I'm with the band" t-shirt for something less ironic before walking in there. I mean, the whole time I'm sitting there thinking, "Am I the only one who just wanted to finish a book without feeling like I needed therapy after?" It's like we can't just have a normal chat about a story anymore without someone making it a whole emotional journey.

lowkey bet the people making it deep are the same ones who'd totally roast a book club for picking something like "Green Eggs and Ham" over Tolstoy. they act like every page has to hit you in the feels or it's not "real" literature.
