That book club meeting last fall where nobody read the book
We spent the whole hour debating the first 20 pages because only two of us bothered to finish it. Sarah kept making up theories about the main character's brother that weren't even in the book and nobody called her out. Has your group ever done the awkward dance where everyone pretends they read but clearly didn't?

Oh man, been there so many times. The worst is when someone starts talking about a character arc that never happened and you're just sitting there nodding along because calling them out feels more awkward than the lie itself. Like, at my last group we had a whole 20 minute debate about whether the author intentionally left the ending ambiguous, but three of us knew for a fact the sequel was already announced. It's this weird social contract where everyone agrees to play pretend rather than admit we all got distracted by life and didn't finish the damn book.

Been there so many times" is basically my life motto at this point. I once nodded along to a ten minute debate about a book's theme that I hadn't even opened.
