Rant: the guy at my book club swore skipping chapters 3-5 of Moby Dick was fine, and now I'm lost at meeting 6
Back in January our club in Gary picked Moby Dick and this retired English teacher in our group kept telling me to just skip the boring whale parts because the story holds up without them. I did it, and at the next meeting everyone was arguing about a scene with Starbuck that I never read, so I spent the whole night nodding like an idiot. Does anyone else have a rule for when to trust a shortcut someone in the group swears by?
Ngl that retired teacher owes you a refund on your reading time. Skipping whale facts is one thing but Starbuck scenes are literally the plot, so you basically paid to sit there confused for a whole meeting. Trust the shortcut when it comes from someone who actually finished the book, not just someone who hated the boring parts.
