Pro tip: group chat is the worst place to pick your next book club read

I sat in on a book club meeting last month where they decided the next pick via text chain. Three hours later we had 17 different suggestions and someone had unfriended two people over whether historical fiction counts as 'real reading'. By the time we landed on something, half the group had already bought the wrong book off Amazon. Has anyone else had better luck using a poll app or just letting one person pick for the whole round?

Honestly, the part about someone unfriending over historical fiction cracks me up because I've seen that exact fight play out in person. Did your group ever figure out a way to handle the people who refuse to read anything outside their comfort zone, or did they just end up picking the safest option?
