Picked the hardcover over the paperback for book club and it backfired

Our group voted on reading a 500 page history book and I insisted on getting the hardcover version because I thought it would look nicer on my shelf. Lugged that heavy thing to three meetings and my bag strap started digging into my shoulder every time. Then someone spilled coffee on it at the second meetup and the pages got all wavy. Should I just switch to digital for the next book or am I overthinking this?

I did the exact same thing with a 600 page biography and swore off hardcovers after the spine cracked on the train. For the next pick, I got the e-book and just downloaded a few pages to my phone for meetings, way easier on the shoulders and no coffee disasters.

Gosh, that reminds me of the time I tried reading a thick paperback in the bathtub and dropped it in the water. Had to dry every single page out with a hairdryer, took me two days.
