Overheard two book club members arguing about unreliable narrators

I was at a coffee shop and heard one woman say she hates unreliable narrators because they make her feel tricked. The other said that's the whole point of a good story. It made me wonder, do most people actually enjoy being misled in a book or does it just feel like bad writing? Has anyone else had a book club debate blow up over this?

People tend to dislike surprises in real life just as much as in stories.

Oh man, I learned that the hard way. Now I just ask people straight up if a surprise is a good idea before I go through with it. Saves a lot of awkwardness.

So are you on the tricked side or the good story side...
