Our club used to pass one paperback around, now half of us read on phones and it changed the whole talk
Back in 2011 in Tacoma we had 7 members and exactly 2 copies of each pick, so whoever held the copy set the pace and we actually talked about the same chapters. Now 5 of us are on e-readers and one woman listens at 1.5 speed, so last Tuesday's talk about the ending fizzled because 3 people were still on chapter 9. Does your group set a page cap or just let everyone finish whenever?
Man this hits close to home. My group literally fell apart over this exact thing last year. Tbh the phones killed it because nobody feels the same pressure to keep up when the book is just sitting there in your pocket. Page caps sound smart but then the fast readers get bored and the slow ones feel rushed. We tried splitting into two groups by pace and that just made everyone feel weird about which side they landed on. Honestly I miss the old days when having the one copy meant you had to finish or you were the jerk holding everyone up. The tech is nice but it took away the shared clock that kept us on the same page, literally.
