Our club picked a 900 page history book and only 3 of us made it past chapter 4
We vote on books every January, and this year the group chose a big Civil War history book that runs almost 900 pages. I was the one who pushed for it, so I felt bad when we met last Tuesday at the library in Beaverton and half the table admitted they had not finished the first 100 pages. One woman, Carol, flat out said she read the first chapter twice and still could not keep the generals straight. We spent 90 minutes talking about the same 40 pages, and honestly it was one of our better talks. The problem is we have a rule that whoever picks the book leads the talk, so I had to stand up there and guide people through stuff they had not read. Now I am worried the group will swing the other way and pick something too easy next month. Has your club ever had a pick that was just too heavy, and how did you handle the meeting without making everyone feel bad?
