Our book club fight over a mental health memoir shifted my view on therapy

I used to think therapy was only for serious crises, but our group's debate on 'The Hilarious World of Depression' opened my eyes. Listening to members share how the book's stories mirrored their own small daily struggles made me see it differently. I started talking to a counselor about my work stress, and it's been a game changer for handling tough weeks.

It's great that worked for you, but I've always been a bit skeptical of turning everyday stress into a therapy thing. Sometimes a bad week is just a bad week, not a sign you need professional help. There's a lot of pressure now to pathologize normal human feelings, and I worry it makes people less resilient. For some of us, a long walk or venting to a friend works just as well without the cost and time.

I get what you mean about not wanting to turn normal stress into a big deal. But the idea that getting help makes people less tough is where I see it different. For me, talking to a pro wasn't about saying my feelings were wrong. It was about learning actual skills to deal with them. A walk or a friend is great, but sometimes you need tools you don't already have. It's not about being weak, it's about getting better at being strong.
