Noticed book club dynamics shift hard once we hit the 4 year mark

We started with 8 people actually finishing the book and debating themes, but after 4 years it's down to 3 of us who read it and the rest just show up for wine and gossip about the author's personal life, what caused that change for your group?

Got a similar thing happening in my group too... we started focusing on shorter books with less intimidating page counts, has that changed anything for you all?

Yeah, I was totally against that idea at first... thought we were "dumbing it down" or something, you know? But after we tried it with a couple of 200-page novels the group actually finished them and had way better discussions. Really changed my mind on how page count affects people's willingness to actually read the thing.
