My book club's margin notes made me rewrite how I annotate everything

Last month at our meeting in Austin, someone pointed out that my margin notes were basically just me arguing with the author. I wrote stuff like "no way" and "that's a stretch" next to every other paragraph. One member said my notes made it hard to discuss the actual themes because I was too busy fact-checking the narrator. She was right, I was treating fiction like a debate. So now I only write questions or connections to other books, nothing reactive. It feels slower at first but our last discussion on the Morrison novel actually went somewhere. Has anyone else gotten feedback that completely changed their reading process?
