My book club voted down a pick because it was "too happy" and one member quit over it
We met at Rosa's diner in Boise two Thursdays back to vote on next month's book, and eight of ten people shot down my pick because it had a happy ending. Janet, who has been in the group for four years, said she reads to feel something heavy, and a book where things work out is just a waste of her time. I told her that a good ending takes just as much craft as a sad one, and she got quiet for a minute, then said she had never thought about it like that. She dropped out of the club the next day and I still feel weird about it. Has anyone else had a pick rejected for being too upbeat, and did it change how your group picks books?
