My book club tried to debate 'The Road' and it went totally sideways

One guy kept arguing the dad was selfish for not leaving the kid at a farm he found, and I got mad defensive. It made me realize I never questioned my own assumptions about survival in that book because I deal with that stuff everyday at work. Has anyone else had a debate in your club that totally flipped how you saw a character?
