Just compared two book club discussion formats and one blew the other out of the water
My group tried the standard round-robin approach for three months, where everyone takes turns talking. Then we switched to a debate-style format where we picked a side on a specific argument from the book - like was the main character justified in lying. Our last meeting on "Project Hail Mary" ran almost two hours longer than usual because people were so fired up. Has anyone else tried switching up their discussion structure?

Oh wow that's such a cool idea! My group tried something similar but we actually did a "what if" night where we rewrote the ending of The Martian. One guy had the main character accidentally launch himself into the sun and we spent like 45 minutes arguing whether that was even possible with the orbital mechanics involved. It got so heated someone actually pulled out a calculator to prove their point. That debate format sounds way more structured though, might steal that for our next book on The Count of Monte Cristo!

Actually, I used to think debate nights in book clubs were a waste of time. Figured the whole point was to agree on what you liked and move on. But we did a similar thing with Dune a few months back where someone argued Paul should have just walked away from the whole prophecy thing and let the universe sort itself out. Three hours later and we're still hashing out whether him taking the throne made things better or worse. That night changed my mind pretty hard. Your group's Martian sun debate sounds way more fun than just nodding along about character arcs.
