I used to pick our club's next read by just voting, but now we do a theme month.
We switched after a fight over a 700 page fantasy novel last fall. Now, like in March we did 'books set in a single room', and it keeps things focused. How does your group pick what to read next?

That rotating host idea from @rivera.keith sounds solid. My friend's group does something similar and they never get stuck on a huge book no one wants. Theme months seem like a good fix for avoiding those big fights too.

Rotating host is cool and all but nobody ever talks about what happens when the host picks three options that are basically the same book with different covers. Theme months like 'books under 300 pages' would force some actual variety.

Try a rotating host system where a different member picks the book each month. The host gives three options that fit a loose theme, like 'award winners' or 'debut novels', and the group votes. It spreads the responsibility and keeps one person from dominating the picks.
