I finally had to leave my book club after the third debate about 'The Great Gatsby' being a love story.

The group kept focusing on the romance, but the book is clearly about class and the American Dream, which my professor at Ohio State hammered home for a whole semester. Has anyone else's club gotten a major theme completely wrong like that?

But the romance is the whole point of the story!

Yeah but the romance is just the surface. The real story is about chasing money and status, which is why Gatsby throws those parties. It's all a show for Daisy.
