Hit 100 books read last month and it totally wrecked my book club

I hit 100 books in a year last month and my book club is mad at me about it. They said I'm going too fast and not really absorbing the stories. But the thing is, I just read fast, I'm not skimming or anything. I keep track on a spreadsheet with page counts and dates started and finished. When I brought up the number at our last meeting, three people actually got defensive and said it wasn't a competition. I wasn't even bragging, I just mentioned it as a personal milestone. Has anyone else had your book club get weird about how many books you read?

Oh man, that is super frustrating. I get that book clubs can have their own vibe, but it's not fair for them to make you feel bad about something that makes you happy. Sounds like they might be feeling insecure about their own reading pace, which isn't your problem to manage.

And a friend of mine went through this exact thing with her sci-fi book club last year. She's a fast reader and would finish the month's book in the first week, then dive into two or three more before the meeting. The organizer actually told her she was "making others feel bad" and asked her to slow down. @lilyfisher youre right, it was totally about their insecurity, not her enjoyment. She ended up finding a different group that matches her pace and they even swap extra recommendations now. It's just not worth staying in a club that makes you feel weird for liking books.
