Heard a librarian say genre labels hurt kids reading growth

I was at a storytime event in Denver last week and the children's librarian mentioned genre stickers make kids stick to one type. Now I'm wondering if that's why my niece only reads fantasy, has anyone else noticed this with their book club picks?

That's a tough one. Genre labels might limit what some kids pick up, but they also help a fantasy-crazy niece find exactly what she wants. It's hard to see how a sticker is worse than a kid who won't read anything because they don't know where to start.

Labels help kids find books faster than making them search blind.
