Can we talk about how our book club almost fell apart over 'The Goldfinch'?
We used to just talk about if we liked a book or not, but last month in our Chicago group, someone said Donna Tartt's ending felt lazy and three people got really mad. Now we pick one big question to focus on, like 'did the main character have a choice,' and it keeps things from getting personal. What's a book that made your club argue like that?

Totally get that. My group almost came to blows over "American Psycho." Had to switch to talking about the satire versus the violence just to keep the peace.

People miss the point in so many arguments now.

Oh man, I gotta disagree a little bit. I think those arguments actually made my group stronger because we had to really dig into why we felt so strongly about it. The Goldfinch debate sounds rough but sometimes that's where the best conversations come from.
