Audiobook vs physical copy for book club, I'm team audio now

Honestly, my book club in Portland nearly split in half over this last month. We read a dense history book, and about half of us did the audio version while the rest stuck with paper. The audio folks caught so much more of the tone and pacing, especially the quotes and dialogue, while the print readers kept getting bogged down in the footnotes. I used to think audio was cheating, but after 3 tries with different narrators, I found one who actually made the whole thing click for me. The big difference was how we discussed it, the audio group could point to specific moments we heard emotionally, not just facts. Now I'm wondering, did anyone else have a bad audio narrator that ruined a whole book for their group, or am I just picky about voices?

That bit about “specific moments we heard emotionally” really hits home for me. Was there a particular scene or chapter where the audio group’s take differed so much from the print folks that you felt like you read two different books? I’m curious if that gap came from the narrator’s choices or just the way sound changes how we latch onto details.
