Working on a boiler in a Pittsburgh mill, I saw a guy skip the hydrostatic test to save time.

He said the pressure gauge looked fine, but I know a visual check isn't enough after a weld repair. Has anyone else had to push back on a crew trying to cut that corner?

Actually, the gauge itself needs testing too.

That's not just about saving time, it's about not blowing the place up. A gauge can look fine and still be way off.

And did you actually see the gauge get calibrated recently or was it just "looked fine" from across the room? I worked with a guy once who swore his gauge was reading correctly because the needle wasn't stuck, but it turned out the spring inside was completely shot. A visual check on a gauge after a weld repair is basically rolling the dice with the equipment and everyone nearby. What did the foreman say when you pointed out the test was mandatory?
