Switched from stick to TIG on a 6 inch boiler tube job in Gary and my rework went from 4 joints a day to zero
I fought it for years because stick was what I knew, but the arc time difference on thin wall tube is night and day. Anybody else make the switch on tube work, or do you still keep stick in the rig for the field stuff?
Stick is like the old push mower that always starts and gets the job done, but once you try the self-propelled one you wonder why you waited. Both cut grass, one just wears you out less. Your rework number going to zero is the whole story, since rework is the hidden cost nobody puts on the bid. Stick still earns its spot for root passes in the wind and mud, but for thin wall tube TIG just makes sense. Keeping both in the rig is the move, use the right tool for the day instead of fighting the one you learned on.
