Old timer told me to never trust a cherry red weld. I didn't listen.

Guy named Walt from Local 85 warned me about getting a weld too hot on a pressure vessel. Said cherry red means you're burning out the carbon. I figured I knew better. Ended up with a crack running 6 inches down the seam on a 300 gallon tank outside Tulsa.

Buddy of mine did the same thing on a propane tank. Crack popped open three days later.

Did he use the same filler rod or was it a different brand? Trying to figure out if it's a technique thing or just bad luck with those tanks.
