Old timer at the hall told me to always walk my girth before tacking
He said if I just eyeballed it I'd end up with a spiral weld sooner or later, and sure enough I skipped it last Tuesday on a big tank job and had to grind out 8 feet of bad bead. Anyone else have that one piece of advice they ignored and instantly regretted?

Walk your girth? Man, I learned that one the hard way too. Tried to eyeball a 45 degree joint on a water line last fall, figured I had it dialed in. Turned out my angle was off by a solid 12 degrees, whole thing looked like a snake with a broken back. Spent four hours with the grinder fixing that mess, and my shoulder still aches when it rains. You'd think after thirty years I'd know better than to skip the basics, but here we are with another lesson learned the noisy way.

Twelve degrees off? Man, that's not even close. I'd have been staring at that snake pipe wondering where I went so wrong.

Twenty years of bad angles, or just a bad day?
