My old foreman told me to stop measuring from the fitting and start measuring from the pipe, and it finally clicked on a boiler job in Gary
About three months back I was doing a replacement on a small packaged boiler outside of Gary, Indiana, and I kept fighting a two foot section that would not line up no matter how many times I checked it. I was measuring off the edge of the fitting every single time, marking, cutting, and then standing there looking at a gap I could slide a nickel into. The guy running the crew, been doing this 26 years, watched me cut the same piece three times and finally walked over and said to hook my tape on the pipe itself and let the fitting take up whatever it takes up. I did not get it at first, felt like giving away control, but he pointed out that a fitting is never exactly where the book says it is once it is welded in and cooling. Ran the next spool his way, and it went in on the first try with maybe a sixteenth of pull. What got me is how long I had been making the same mistake and just blaming the material or the heat. Has anyone else had a hand break them of measuring off fittings, or is that just a habit that dies hard?
