Bought a $200 magnetic drill press off Craigslist and it stripped out after 3 holes

Saw a deal on a used mag drill from some guy out in Gary. Looked clean, test ran it on some flat bar and it spun fine. Got it home, tried drilling through a 1 inch plate for a tube sheet repair and the magnet started slipping after the third hole. Took it apart and the coil windings were all corroded inside. Shop quoted me $150 to fix it and even then said it might not hold. So I basically threw $200 in the trash plus gas driving out there. Anyone else get burned on used mag drills before?

Man I feel your pain, that's a rough way to blow two hundred bucks. I once picked up a "barely used" belt sander at a flea market that sounded like a dying cat after two minutes, so I get the whole Craigslist gamble thing. At least you got three holes out of it - my sander just sat there and vibrated, didn't even move the wood. Sometimes you gotta wonder if those garage deals come with a secret warranty that expires the second you hand over the cash.

Never really believed in buyer's remorse until I watched that drill smoke out after three holes.
