An old boilermaker in Gary walked my whole crew through a tube sheet leak and it stuck with me
Last March we were on a shutdown in Gary, Indiana and had a tube sheet leaking on a waste heat boiler. This old timer named Ray, probably 30 years in the trade, watched us struggle with it for about an hour and then just walked over and started talking us through his method step by step. He showed us how to chase the crack with a die grinder before welding instead of just piling metal on top like we were doing. Nobody asked him to help, he just did it, and that leak held at 400 psi through startup. Has anyone else had an old hand jump in like that on a job?
Man, that Ray guy sounds like the boilermaker version of a guardian angel who actually knows what he's doing. Meanwhile I once spent two hours "fixing" a leak that turned out to be a drain valve somebody left cracked open.
