Tried using my phone's night mode on a moving car and got a ghost trail instead of a sharp shot

I was trying to catch a friend's car leaving at dusk but the 3 second exposure turned the headlights into a light smudge, what settings should I have changed for moving subjects?

Hang onto the idea that the blur is actually capturing motion, not just a mistake. Switch your camera to shutter priority mode, that gives you control over how fast the shutter opens and closes. For a moving car at dusk, you want at least 1/125 of a second to freeze the headlights into little points instead of a streak. Crank up the ISO higher even if it gets a bit grainy, sharp grain is way better than a smudgy mess. Also turn off night mode completely, it's made for still objects not flying metal boxes. Honestly that ghost trail is a fun accident to keep in your camera roll but for the real shot you need to trade some light for speed.

Life's funny like that, always blurring the stuff we want to see sharp.
