Not really a trick when you could have just set it to shutter priority from the start.

The real trick is knowing that sometimes shutter priority locks you into a specific look that might not work in mixed lighting. I shot a wedding once where the reception hall had both dim candlelight and bright stage lights, and shutter priority kept trying to balance everything by darkening the whole scene. Manual let me keep the shutter fast enough for the dancers while still pulling out the warm candle glow in the shadows. Shutter priority would have made the candlelit tables look like a cave. It's about understanding your environment, not just your settings.
