Tried a $3 bag of clay kitty litter in my slack tub and it finally stopped growing that weird film

Kept getting a gray scum on top of my quench water no matter how often I changed it, which was weekly and a pain (5 gallon bucket, outside tap in the cold). Dropped in a handful of plain unscented clay litter after reading an old farrier mention it, and two days later the tub was clear and the scale settled to the bottom. Anyone else use clay for this, or is there a better fix that won't gum up my pump?
