TIL that leaving my hammer in a bucket of vinegar overnight actually cleaned up 3 years of scale
I had a cross peen that was so caked in scale I almost retired it to the scrap pile. Figured I had nothing to lose so I dropped the head in white vinegar overnight in a plastic bucket from the garage, and the next morning most of the crust came off with a brass brush. Now I am torn on whether this is a real solution or just a trick that eats the steel over time. Some folks say acid weakens the face and I should stick to grinding and sanding, others swear by it for old tools. Has anyone run vinegar on a hammer face long term and noticed any pitting or soft spots?
