The farrier in Abilene told me my forge was running too hot and I laughed at him
Last month I was working on a pair of tongs at the shop in Abilene and this old farrier named Walt kept watching me from a folding chair, and after about 20 minutes he walks over and says my steel looks like a sparkler on the 4th of July. I brushed him off at first but he pulled out a magnet and showed me I was burning the carbon right out of my 1080 stock, so I dropped my forge temp down to a dull orange and my welds stopped cracking on the first try. Anybody else had to eat crow over their heat range, or is it just me?
