Paid $120 for a 'dragon skin' pattern and got a wavy mess

Bought a fancy rolling mill texture plate last spring from a booth at the Ohio fair. They swore it was stainless, but after two passes my copper sheet came out looking like a stretched garbage bag. Turns out it was aluminum with a bad etch job, the pattern just smeared. I could've scored my own texture with a ball peen and a file for free. Has anyone else gotten burned by those traveling tool vendors? What do you use for texture when you don't have a mill?

Ngl, I just hammer texture into sheet with a ball peen, works every time.
