Old timer told me to quench my tongs in water between heats
A guy who's been forging since the 70s told me to dip my tongs in water every time I put steel in the fire and it's saved me from burning my hands three times already - anyone else do this or is it just an old habit?

My third year forging I dropped a red hot billet because my tongs got too hot and I couldn't hold them steady. Quenching them between heats keeps the handles cool enough to grip properly even after a long session. That old timer gave you solid advice, I still do it every time.

Did your old timer also tell you to spit on the anvil for good luck?
