Just realized my old coal forge was holding me back after a trip to Portland

Three years ago, I was still using the same coal forge my dad taught me on. I thought it was fine, just the way things were done. Then last month, I visited a friend's shop in Portland and he had a modern gas forge. I watched him heat a piece of steel to working temp in under two minutes, with no smoke and perfect control. I went home and tried to make a simple leaf keychain on my coal setup last week. It took me over twenty minutes just to get the metal hot enough, and the air was thick with smoke. That was the moment it clicked. I've been fighting my tools instead of letting them help me. I'm saving up for a gas forge now. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed a big jump in what they can make?

Your line about "fighting my tools" really hits home, I was the same way until I switched.

Know exactly how you feel, that moment of clarity is huge.
