Finally got my first forge weld to hold on a san mai billet after 6 tries
I kept overheating the core steel and getting cold shuts on the cladding, but slowing my hammer blows and watching the color more carefully made it stick that last time - anyone else have a specific trick that finally clicked for forge welding?

6 tries is just your warmup. My personal record before getting a weld to stick was 9.

9 tries? That's dedication right there. I remember one time I was trying to fix a fence gate and the first five welds looked like bird droppings. By the sixth one I was just holding the rod at a weird angle and hoping for the best. Finally on try number 8 it actually held, but then I accidentally burned a hole in the metal. @eva243 knows what I'm talking about, that moment when you think you've got it and then the whole thing just melts away. Welding is 90% patience and 10% luck if you ask me.
