Drove 4 hours for a scrap yard anvil, ended up using my Harbor Freight one anyway
Found a beat up 150 lb anvil on Craigslist near Scranton for $200. Drove out there with a buddy, checked the rebound, figured it was worth it. Got it home and realized the face was actually worse than the photos showed, tons of chips near the edges. After a week of fighting with it, I grabbed my old 55 lb cast iron one and got more work done. Has anyone else wasted time on a fancy score just to go back to what you already had?

Bought a "better" anvil off a guy two towns over, drove an hour each way, and it turned out to have a dead spot right in the middle of the face. Spent two weekends trying to dress it with an angle grinder and made it worse. Finally just went back to my little beat up 70 pounder that rings like a bell and does everything I need. The big ones are nice for looks but if the face is shot you are just swinging a hammer at a rock. Next time I'm bringing a ball bearing and a file and testing before I hand over cash.
