Dropped $140 on a cheap belt grinder and it almost cost me a finger, check your platen before you buy
I know we all want to save cash on tools but I need to warn you about the low end belt grinders flooding the market lately. I picked one up for $140 at a flea market in Reno and the platen was not square, it was off by almost 3/16 of an inch. That gap grabbed a blade I was grinding and yanked it right out of my hands into the wheel. I got lucky and only lost some knuckle skin but my buddy who welds full time had the same thing happen and needed 6 stitches. If you are looking at a used grinder, bring a straight edge and check the platen and the tracking before you hand over any money. Has anyone else run into a bad platen on a budget grinder, and did you fix it or just return it?
