Coal vs. propane for small hooks, I picked the dirty route

I spent last month forging fish hooks on a tiny propane forge and got consistent results, but switched to a coal fire for a weekend demo and the steel moved so much faster that I'm thinking of sticking with coal for detail work. The catch is the smoke and cleanup, my garage still smells like a campfire and I've got ash in my coffee mug. Does anyone else run both setups depending on the piece, or am I overcomplicating a simple hobby?
