Chat with an old timer at a hammer-in last weekend changed how I think about steel hardness

He told me he aims for a softer edge on his axes because they're easier to touch up in the field, and now I'm wondering if I've been over-hardening my own tools for years has anyone else switched to a lower Rockwell for field tools?

Man, that old timer had it right. Been doing the same thing with my bushcraft hatchet for a few years now and it's way more practical for actual use in the woods compared to chasing a brittle edge.

Totally agree on that. My grandpa taught me to file a hatchet to a working edge and stop worrying about shaving with it, and I've never looked back.
