The page 404 in a murder mystery that ruined the whole case for me

Hit page 404 of a 412 page thriller and the killer was just a random guy who showed up in one sentence on page 87, no clues at all, has anyone else had an ending that felt like the author literally gave up?

Ugh, the random guy in one sentence thing kills me. I read a book last year where the villain was literally just the mailman who got described once in chapter 3, then never again until the finale. Like, I get being subtle, but that's not a clue, that's a tax write-off. The worst part is when I went back to check, there was zero hint he was even upset about anything, let alone motivated to murder someone. It honestly felt like the author realized the page count was too low and just threw a dart at a list of character names. That's when I started flipping to the last chapter before buying thrillers, no joke.
