The last page of that memoir about the lighthouse keeper
I borrowed a memoir from a buddy about a lighthouse keeper in Maine, and the ending just cuts to a recipe for clam chowder out of nowhere. No resolution, no final thought, just the recipe and a note saying 'the fog never lifts.' Has anyone else hit an ending that felt like the author just gave up mid-sentence or is this a known thing with certain presses?

Did the author secretly get paid by the word and just hit his quota mid-soup? That's honestly a power move if I've ever seen one, making the final existential thought a shopping list for potatoes and clams. Either way, I'm now convinced the real ending was that the fog ate the last chapter and the recipe was all that survived.
