The $18 spent on a used copy of The Silent Tower still haunts me

I grabbed this sci-fi novel at a thrift store in Denver for $18 because the cover looked cool. The whole book builds this mystery about a locked room, and then the last page just says the alien wrote it all from a dream. No payoff, no clues, just a paragraph that makes the first 300 pages pointless. Has anyone else paid good money for an ending that felt like the author gave up mid-typing?
