That one chapter that made me put the book down for 3 weeks

I was reading a thriller last month and got to chapter 24 where the main character just starts talking to a ghost that was never hinted at before. I literally checked if pages were missing because it felt like another book got stapled in. I sat on my couch in Austin for 3 whole weeks before picking it back up, mostly out of spite. The ending then revealed the ghost was a metaphor for grief, but zero setup made it feel random. Has anyone else hit a twist that was so out of nowhere you questioned your own reading skills? I'm curious if I missed something or if the author just dropped the ball.

Ugh, that's like real life throwing plot twists with zero foreshadowing.
